All-sky aurora cameras

The whole sky over Lapland, live

Fish-eye cameras photograph the entire sky every minute on dark nights. North is at the top – look for a green arc rising from the northern edge.

Images refresh automatically every minute. The all-sky cameras operate only when the sky is dark – in daytime you will see the last image of the night. Camera images © Finnish Meteorological Institute and Sodankylä Geophysical Observatory (University of Oulu).

How to use the cameras

Is the aurora out right now?

Live cameras are the quickest way to check whether it is worth heading out. The north-facing webcams in Kilpisjärvi and Levi show the aurora as it appears, the Santa Claus Village webcam shows the conditions at the Arctic Circle, and the all-sky cameras in Rovaniemi, Sodankylä and Posio see the whole sky at once – a green glow on the northern edge of the image is often the first sign of the aurora.

If the Sodankylä camera further north shows green arcs and the Kp forecast is rising, the lights may be moving south. Check the cloud cover for your spot and get ready.
